Anniversary:

Today is the first anniversary of our move to Canada. What a tremendous and pleasurable year! A year of discovery, and incredible new friendships. I have resumed my degree, and find myself staring down the barrel of more social and personal activities that I can possibly undertake. My life has made transition from the sense of ‘limbo’ to which I succcumbed during the previous few years.

Immigrating is a funny thing. Moving around as much as I have, I haven’t felt myself as having a clear national identity for a while now. So it was interesting when I stumbled in a conversation a few weeks ago: I had begun to describe myself as a Canadian, but then stopped short thinking that I have a South African passport at the moment.

If home is where the heart is, then I have have a new home. Thank you Canada!

It would be interesting to know what differences you’ve found between the countries you’ve lived in. Culture, traditions, perspectives, laws, that kind of thing?

finally! welcome back!
i’ve always been proud to be canadian: even after all these years here in holland (and only a couple of visits home) i still have maple syrup in my veins; what’s more, people’s reaction to my canadian-ness strengthens that feeling.
and now for some photos, ryan? eh?
