Return of the King

Now I know why movies are usually edited down to 2 and a half hours. Even for its great entertainment value, 215 minutes is over the limit for something that you’re seeing in a movie theatre. Not that I was checking my watch the whole way through, it’s just the last 25 minutes of ‘fluff’ that will bring on the yawning.

I think that those minutes could have been better spent on enriching the dialogue throghout, which was a little dry at times when it should have pulled on the heart strings, and extending the battle scene at Minas Tirith (which, though good, leaves you feeling somewhat deflated when it ends so abruptly and whimsically with the arrival of the undead army — and whatever happened to the Orc general?).

Interestingly, it is impressive when you enter the theatre 40 minutes before the start of screening and struggle to find two adjacent empty seats, given that the movie has been showing for two weeks already.

Not Much

Isn’t the CNN Sports Illustrated site just pathetic? Look at it, barely and element of design to guide your eye through the content. Dull, boring, and cluttered. Now imagine how much they probably paid for that muck.

In case you needed any inspiration for creating CSS nav buttons: here it is.

Hmm … looks like my Movable Type install is borked … I should take care of that.

Touring Canada

Sometime in 2004 my friend, Michael, and I will be travelling across the vast expanse that is Canada. Working within the constraints of studies and work, we’re aiming for the trip to take place in the Summertime, between June and August, rather than during the Winter holidays. Right now we’re trying to put together a list of destinations and activities.

We would greatly appreciate hearing your recommendations and suggestions for places to go, things to see and do; any do’s and do not’s that you’d like to share; as well as any resources you think might be helpful. Mainstream, or out of the ordinary. Thanks.

Finals Done

Alright! Finished for the semester, and I really gave that law final a good smack in the chops tonight. I’m looking forward to a good few weeks of non-academic pursuits — no, I don’t just mean beer. There’s a host of things on my to do list, and planning for New Year’s is underway. Right now though, catching up on sleep is taking priority over all else … z Z z Z …

Footballer of the Year

*Yawn* FIFA have voted Zinedine Zidane 2003 footballer of the year. *Yawn* Surely second placed Thierry Henry’s performance at Arsenal this season was more deserving.

In my books, however, Ruud Van Nistelrooy was this year’s big dog. The Dutchman’s presence at Manchester United has been formiddable, making Beckham’s move to Real Madrid worth less than “pfft.” To get an idea of this man’s potential you need look no farther than his 60 league goals for the club in under 3 years quite remarkable when you compare that to Ryan Giggs’ 84 league goals in 13 years — sure Giggs is a midfielder, but he’s no slouch. Oh, and Ruud did this. Ruud carries the team, Ruud leads the team, Ruud inspires the team, Ruud entertains the fans. I only hope he can do the same for the Netherlands at Euro 2004.

Ok, so just maybe I’m a little biased as a Man U. supporter, and because I’m 12.5% Dutch. Still, if he doesn’t walk away with that award next year … I won’t really give a sh*t anyways. I’ve never been one to go by that sort of thing in the first place.

Radio Credit

I was talking to Mike about how cool radio frequency credit cards [via Slashdot] would be. Then I realized how risky the system would really be. Hasn’t the industry learnt anything from our existing wi-fi debacle? Think some guy with a phone cam taking pictures up your girlfriends’ skirts is a bit much? What about someone running around with a receiver just snooping your credit card details? Heck, you could just leave a receivers in high-traffic areas, go for a few drinks, and pick them up at the end of the day.

URL Suckage

Calling Sky News, calling Sky News: “Your URL is terrible.” Do you think I enjoy typing “http://www.sky.com/skynews/home/”? I don’t, really. Your site can’t even handle it if I try spare myself the tiniest bit of agony by leaving out ‘www’. Please, think about how ridiculous this is.

Quickies

  • The inventor of the ‘insert’ key should be shot. I’ve been tapping that sucker all week and losing work to it.
  • I’m suspicious of yogurt now that the shelf life is as long as 30 days.
  • Speed limits should be read as ” ___ divide by 2; add 100”, where blank is the posted limit.
  • We have a new LG washer and dryer. I think they’re smarter than me.
