‘Well-stocked Romanian fridge’ is something of an oxymoron by more Western standards I’m afraid Lynn. Although things have improved immensely since I first came here in 1996, there’s a still a lot that’s left to be desired. Availability and quality are the two biggest sticking points. Finding substitutes for the stuff you’re used to back home can be difficult, when you’re lucky enough to find brands that you’re familiar with they’re soon sold out and no one bothers to import any more.
That said, the average Romanian fridge will be packed with tomatoes, cucumbers, and cheeses (served with bread, as finger food, preceding just about any meal); along with various salad creations (everything from a version of potato salad to a ham, egg & cheese mixture). Hopefully you’ll also find some sarmale (ground meat mixed with rice, veg & spices, wrapped inside a pickled cabbage/grape leaf, and stewed), and mititei (grilled ground beef rolls) — these are both very tasty! A couple of pork chops might also be found. Dangerous quantities pf wine and tuica (plum brandy), or palinka, will also be found.
Snack foods are basically bread, pretzels, potato chips, and seminte (sunflower seeds).
Miss? I’m not so sure about that one, they’ve got some ‘iffy’ foods here. I’m not a big fan of ciorba de burta, ‘soured milk & vinegar soup of the stomach’, for example ;)
