While I wouldn’t withhold Robert DeNiro the credit to “Godfather II”, “Cape Fear”, “Taxi Driver” and “Deer Hunter”, those where made in his prime, now passed.
What is Robert DeNiro today? A hasbeen, that’s what. “Showtime”, “15 Minutes”, “The Score”, “Men of Honor” and “Ronin” are all somewhat entertaining, and Robert DeNiro doesn’t goof up either of them (he never does), but he is neither worthy of appraisal for his acting effort.
He’s not bad, in fact he’s good, but he hasn’t been “top 5” for many years. His last solid performance, in my opinion, was in “Jackie Brown” (1997), before that “Casino” (1995).
My fav actors today are Philip Seymore Hoffman, Al Pacino and Jack “God” Nicholson.
Yes Tomas, I have to agree with you that the more recent appearances such as “15 Minutes”, “The Score”, “Men of Honor” were no great feat of acting. DeNiro and his agent need to get their hands on some more interesting scripts.
DeNiro’s entertainment value, however, is phenomenal, “Ronin” is testament to this.
